The direct observation of gravitational waves (GWs) by the LIGO scientific collaboration opened the new science of Gravitational Astronomy. Scientists have compared this to Galileo pointing his telescope to the sky, offering instead an ear to the cosmos. After the remarkable landmark of detection, GW science will soon turn into the study of the properties of the sources and address fundamental questions in astrophysics and cosmology. In particular, binary coalescences are posed to become the leading probe to test gravitational dynamics, and the physics of compact objects under unique conditions and GWs propagation can probe the Universe dynamics on cosmological scale.

Enterpreneurship3 212x300October 15-19, 2018
São Paulo, Brazil - ICTP-SAIFR/IFT-UNESP

This school is a one-week intensive course aimed at students studying a STEM subject, and for those who are interested in gaining entrepreneurial skills with the view to commercialise scientific ideas or inventions.

Participants will explore the connection between science and business, and sessions will be delivered by experts in business and in technological applications involving agriculture, health and education. In addition to discussing these technological applications, the school will also introduce topics that are fundamental to business such as intellectual property (IP) and patenting, business plan fundamentals, technology readiness levels, market analysis, business financials, presentation and pitching skills and several others. Students will have the opportunity to practise their pitching skills through a group project and a pitching competition at the end of the week.

We seek student candidates with a Master Degree in Physics, Mechanical Engineering or Mathematics interested in doing a Ph.D. at the University of the Balearic Islands with Dr. Carles Bona Casas and Joan J. Cerdà. Topics of the Ph.D work are open and to be discussed with the candidate. Nonetheless, we would be very interested in pursuing lines somehow related to the recently awarded projects of the group: study via numerical simulations of the microfluidics in the microvessels and micro-capillaries coated with polymeric structures and/or with the study of responsive magnetic structures as key elements of new fluidic devices.

eso paranal 51 635x422Astronomers in Brazil have voiced their disappointment after the European Southern Observatory (ESO) suspended the country’s membership following its failure to ratify an agreement struck in 2010. ESO had allowed Brazil to be an interim member, giving its astronomers access to the consortium’s telescopes, but from 1 April scientists will have to apply for time on a similar basis as non-ESO members.
